CROPS
  • The gross value of Australian crops increased by 10% to $28.0 billion in 2012-13.
  • Lower production levels of wheat were offset by a high demand for exports, resulting in a 6% increase in the gross value of wheat to $7.2 billion.
  • Most major crops recorded an increase in gross value. Canola had a record production year, which in combination with the high oil content of the 2012-13 crop, drove an increase in gross value of 29% to $2.3 billion. A strong export market, coupled with local demand resulted in a 20% increase in the gross value of barley to $2.1 billion. Cotton was an exception with its gross value decreasing (down 19% to $1.9 billion).
  • The gross value of fruit and nuts (excluding grapes) increased by 20% to $3.7 billion, driven predominantly by a 15% increase in the gross value of oranges to $346 million, and a 5% increase in the gross value of bananas to $491 million. These were partially offset by a 5% decrease in the gross value of apples to $441 million, with industry reporting an oversupply.
  • The gross value of vegetable crops increased nationally by 13% to $3.8 billion. An increase in the price of potatoes resulted in the gross value rising by 10% to $690 million. The gross value of tomatoes increased to $439 million (up 25%), driven by increased production. A decrease in gross value was seen for onions (down 6% to $200 million) and carrots (down 10% to $194 million).
