2006-07 NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (NRM) SURVEY

This survey is conducted every two years and was developed in response to a demand for a more extensive range of NRM statistics. It is undertaken by the Environment section of the ABS. The most recent publication Natural Resource Management on Australian Farms 2004-05 (cat. no. 4620.0) was released in October 2006.

Depending on the reference year, it has a close affinity with either the Agricultural Survey or Census, as its sample of approximately 20,000 farms is drawn from units included in the annual Agricultural collection.
Grasslands

The survey provides information on natural resource management issues, activities and costs on Australia Farms. It includes details on priority NRM topics for example; weeds, pests, land and soil and farm management, at the Australian, State and regional levels.

Farmers are asked to identify the extent and type of NRM issues present on their land and the activities undertaken to prevent or manage them. It also asks farmers to provide details of the labour and financial costs associated with activities undertaken.

The results provide an important perspective into NRM activities and issues occurring on Australian farms but because they are based on the perception of farmers, may differ from scientific or satellite assessment.

For research/background information only a sample copy of the 2007 Natural Resource Management Survey form is attached here.

Please note: A PDF version of the form should not be printed off and used as a replacement for a lost 'hardcopy' form. Farmers who may have misplaced their original form are asked to ring 1800 647 011 and request a new hardcopy be mailed out.
