In 2006 Australia's sheep and lamb flock was 91.0 million, 19.9 million head (18%) less than in 2001. Judging by the accompanying maps showing sheep and lambs per square kilometre, this reduction is most obvious in NSW, Queensland and South Australia with falls of 8.7 million head (21%), 4.2 million head (49%) and 1.3 million head (10%) respectively. Less evident was the 4.4 million (20%) fall in Victoria's flock numbers and the smaller falls in the other states.
