In 2006 Australia's meat cattle herd was 25.6 million, 1.2 million head (5%) greater than in 2001. In absolute terms, the Queensland herd had increased by the biggest margin (266,000 head) while Tasmania (18%), Western Australia (12%) and South Australia (10%) made the biggest gains relative to their 2001 levels. The accompanying maps of Australia's cattle grazing regions show only minor changes to the beef cattle per square kilometre over the five year period between agricultural censuses.
