VALUE OF IRRIGATED PRODUCTION ON THE MURRAY RIVER...AN ANIMATED VIEW

Recently, the ABS developed an improved methodology for calculating Gross Value of Irrigated Agricultural Production (GVIAP). Experimental estimates using this methodology were released in May in the publication Experimental Estimates of the Gross Value of Irrigated Agricultural Production (cat. no. 4610.0.55.008). The publication provides datacubes presenting estimates for the reference period 2000-01 to 2006-07 at a national, state and Murray-Darling Basin level.

Taking the presentation of these estimates a step further, the attached geographical display shows 2005-06 Agricultural Census data by amalgamated mesh block units for regions adjoining the Murray River. The data were manipulated using Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) software and displayed by Google Earth to produce an animated aerial 'fly-over' illustrating the gross value of irrigated and non-irrigated production.

The blue and white 'pillars' represent the total gross value of production in areas with irrigated production -- the blue portion representing the gross value of the irrigated production...the white, non-irrigated production. The brown pillars depict the gross value of production in areas of dryland agricultural production.
