Ag Mag | the agriculture newsletter

WELCOME

Welcome to this edition of the 'Ag Mag', a newsletter to help keep you informed of the ABS work program around land, agriculture and environment statistics.

With the 2010-11 Agricultural Census now only 15 months away, planning work is proceeding full steam ahead. In previous editions of the 'Ag Mag' we highlighted the broad range of information seen as essential for the ABS to collect in the Agricultural Census.

There is also the opportunity for some user-funded questions to be included on the Agricultural Census form, however the deadline of 31 March 2010 for submissions is rapidly approaching. This edition includes information on the timetable for submissions, approximate costings and ABS contacts for any queries around the Agricultural Census content.

Final estimates from the 2008-09 Agricultural Survey will be released shortly, starting with Agricultural Commodities, Australia (ABS cat. no. 7121.0) on 9 April 2010 and Water Use on Australian Farms (ABS cat. no. 4618.0) on 19 April 2010. We are pleased to advise that these releases are several weeks earlier than in previous years, made possible by improvements to our collection processes and statistical systems. Further details on the full range of agriculture, land and water releases planned for 2010 are included in this edition.

During the next 12 months, the ABS will also be conducting its 2009-10 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (or ARMS). Please see the ARMS page in this newsletter for details on the agricultural commodity and livestock information to be collected along with data on important land, water and natural resource management practices and activities undertaken by Australian agricultural businesses.

We hope you enjoy this edition of the 'Ag Mag'. If you have any questions regarding the content of this newsletter or suggestions as to what could be included in future issues, please contact Karen Connaughton on (02) 6252 5337 or karen.connaughton@abs.gov.au.
