WHEAT AND GRAIN: Stocks and uses

The previous edition of the Ag Mag included information on the suite of wheat collections and information released each month. Since then, this range of information has been expanded to include barley, other grains and pulses as well as wheat grain used and stored on-farm.

The Grain (Wheat) Handlers Stocks Survey (GHSS) is a survey of major bulk grain handlers conducted on a monthly basis. Wheat estimates are published monthly and stock estimates for barley, other grains and pulses are now collected and published quarterly, commencing from September 2009 in Stocks of Grain Held by Bulk Handling Companies and Grain Traders, Australia (cat. no. 7122.0.55.001).

Wheat Use and Stocks, Australia (cat. no. 7307.0) is released monthly and presents data of wheat grain stocks and use for selected manufacturing and agricultural businesses, licensed exporters and bulk grain handlers. Commencing from the December 2009 reference period, the scope of the Wheat Use Survey will be expanded to include grain growing and dairying businesses. In addition the 2008-09 Agricultural Survey collected information relating to on farm stocks and use of wheat with information released in Principal Agricultural Commodities, Australia, Preliminary, 2008-09.

Estimates of use of barley, other grains and pulses and stocks held by the above businesses was also released on a quarterly basis from the September 2009 quarter as data cubes in 7307.0.

The wheat surveys are undertaken on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to provide information on the Australian wheat industry. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) use these data to compile a regular report on uncommitted wheat stocks within the Australian economy. The Grains Research and Development Corporation have funded collection of quarterly data for barley, other grains and pulses during 2009-10.
