RESULTS BY HOUSEHOLD TYPE

There are conceptual differences in the way that the housing and financial and insurance services groups are treated in the ALCI and CPI. See the Explanatory Notes for further detail.

Employee households

The index for employee households rose 0.6% for the December quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in mortgage interest charges, fruit, vegetables, domestic holiday travel and accommodation and automotive fuel. The major offsetting decreases were provided by pharmaceuticals, motor vehicles and audio, visual and computing equipment.

The ALCI for employee households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.4%) for the December quarter 2010. Employee households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on financial and insurance services than the wider CPI population group (which comprises total metropolitan households). The mortgage interest charges paid by employee households recorded a significant increase for the quarter and for conceptual reasons this item is not included in the CPI.

The index for employee households rose 4.5% for the year to December quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in mortgage interest charges, tobacco, electricity, rents and automotive fuel. The major offsetting decreases were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, domestic holiday travel and accommodation and motor vehicles.

The ALCI for employee households showed a larger increase compared to the CPI (+2.6%) for the year to December quarter 2010. Mortgage interest charges recorded an increase for the year to December quarter 2010 and for conceptual reasons, this item is not included in the CPI.

Age pensioner households

The index for age pensioner households rose 0.7% for the December quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in fruit, vegetables, electricity, domestic holiday travel and accommodation and automotive fuel. The offsetting decreases were provided by pharmaceuticals, beef and veal and motor vehicle repair and servicing.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.4%) for the December quarter 2010. Age pensioner households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food, which recorded price rises for fruit and vegetables this quarter. Rises in mortgage interest charges also contributed to the difference due to interest charges being excluded from the CPI for conceptual reasons.

The index for age pensioner households rose 3.1% for the year to December quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in tobacco, electricity, hospital and medical services, vegetables and insurance. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, domestic holiday travel and accommodation and women's outerwear.

The ALCI for age pensioner households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+2.6%) for the year to December quarter 2010. Compared to the wider CPI population group, age pensioner households also have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on utilities and fruit and vegetables, both of which increased for the year to December quarter 2010. Mortgage interest charges recorded an increase for the year to December quarter 2010 and for conceptual reasons, this item is not included in the CPI.

Other government transfer recipient households

The index for other government transfer recipient households rose 0.7% for the December quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in fruit, vegetables, rents, mortgage interest charges, electricity and automotive fuel. The major offsetting decreases were provided by pharmaceuticals, audio, visual and computing equipment and beef and veal.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.4%) for the December quarter 2010. The increase in mortgage interest charges for other government transfer households contributed to this difference due to mortgage interest charges being excluded from the CPI for conceptual reasons. The relatively higher expenditure by other government transfer recipient households on rents also contributed to the difference due to rents recording an increase for the quarter. Other government transfer recipient households also have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food, which recorded price rises in fruit and vegetables this quarter.

The index for other government transfer recipient households rose 4.5% for the year to December quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in tobacco, mortgage interest charges, rents, electricity and vegetables. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, women's outerwear, children's and infants' clothing and domestic holiday travel and accommodation.

The ALCI for other government transfer recipient households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+2.6%) for the year to December quarter 2010. Compared to the wider CPI population group, other government transfer recipient households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on alcohol and tobacco, which increased for the year to December quarter 2010. Mortgage interest charges also recorded an increase for the year to December quarter 2010 and for conceptual reasons, this item is not included in the CPI.

Self-funded retiree households

The index for self-funded retiree households rose 0.5% for the December quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in fruit, vegetables, domestic holiday travel and accommodation and automotive fuel. The major offsetting decreases were provided by pharmaceuticals, motor vehicles and audio, visual and computing equipment.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed a larger increase than the CPI (+0.4%) for the December quarter 2010. Self-funded retiree households have a relatively higher proportion of expenditure on food, which recorded price increases for fruit and vegetables this quarter. Self-funded retiree households recipient households also recorded increases for mortgage interest charges this quarter and for conceptual reasons this item is not included in the CPI.

The index for self-funded retiree households rose 2.6% for the year to December quarter 2010 mainly due to increases in tobacco, hospital and medical services, electricity, automotive fuel, mortgage interest charges and insurance. The major offsets were provided by audio, visual and computing equipment, domestic holiday travel and accommodation and motor vehicles.

The ALCI for self-funded retiree households showed the same increase for the year to December quarter 2010 as the CPI (+2.6%). Compared to the wider CPI population group, self-funded retiree households have a relatively lower proportion of expenditure on housing, which increased for the year to December quarter 2010. Self-funded retiree households also recorded increases for mortgage interest charges for the year to December quarter 2010 and for conceptual reasons this item is not included in the CPI.
