There were an estimated 3,866 farms recorded in Tasmania at 30 June 2004.

Beef cattle farming was the most common agricultural activity, with an estimated 1,154 farms accounting for 30% of farms in the state.

Sheep farming was the next most common activity with an estimated 583 farms accounting for 15% of farms in the state.
