CHANGES TO STATISTICS PRESENTED ON A COUNTRY BASIS

From this issue, there are changes to the ABS trade country classification which will impact on time series spreadsheets and data cubes. The changes result from the recognition of new countries by the United Nations and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and changes to the Developing Countries category to align with Developing Countries list in Schedule 1 of the Customs Tariff Act 1995.


INTRODUCTION OF NEW COUNTRIES

Two new countries 'South Sudan' and 'Sudan' will be added to the time series Table 2 and Data Cubes 8 and 9 containing all countries. The country previously known as Sudan will have its label amended to 'Former Sudan' and will cease at the September 2012 reference month. The ordering of countries has been affected for all country tables.

CHANGES TO ABS TRADE OVERSEAS PORT CLASSIFICATION

Changes have been made to the ABS trade overseas port classification for the new countries, however, there will be no changes to publication tables or time series spreadsheets. Port data are available via tailored user pays consultancies. Details of the changes are as follows:

CHANGES TO THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES CATEGORY

From this issue of this publication the composition of the Developing Countries category published in time series spreadsheets Table 2 will be updated as follows:
  • include Serbia (recognised as a Developing Country in Schedule 1 of the Customs Tariff Act 1995)
  • include Papua New Guinea (to align with Developing Countries list in Schedule 1 of the Customs Tariff Act 1995)
  • exclude Western Sahara (to align with Developing Countries list in Schedule 1 of the Customs Tariff Act 1995).

The new composition will apply to the whole time series.
