FEATURE ARTICLE: INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN SERVICES BY PARTNER COUNTRY, 2006, PRELIMINARY

INTRODUCTION

This article provides preliminary calendar year data for 2006 for Australia's international trade in services, for exports (credits) and imports (debits), by selected trading partners.

INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Data released in this article is preliminary, with final data for the December quarter 2006 not yet available. As the data is preliminary, care should be exercised in interpreting the data. More comprehensive and updated estimates for 2006 will be published with the March 2007 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia (cat. no. 5368.0).

As well as these data being preliminary, there are occasional difficulties in allocating data to a country due to lack of information or the confidentiality of the data for trading partners involved.

A comprehensive explanation of the data sources used and the methodology applied in the compilation of partner country statistics is provided in Chapter 17 of Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia - Concepts, Sources and Methods (cat. no. 5331.0).

ANALYSIS OF AUSTRALIAN TRADE WITH SELECTED PARTNER COUNTRIES

In the calendar year 2006 Australia recorded a surplus of $1.0 billion in the balance on services. The largest trade in services surplus was recorded with China at $2.2 billion. As well as China, Australia recorded surpluses with a number of its Asian trading partners, including Korea at $1.2 billion and India at $1.1 billion, although the balance of trade with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) recorded an overall deficit of $1.3 billion in 2006, this was due in part to a deficit with Singapore of $1.2 billion.

Deficits were recorded for most European trading partners, with the exception of a surplus of $0.7billion with the United Kingdom, and small surpluses with Belgium and Luxembourg, Ireland, and Sweden.

In terms of Australia's service exports, the top 6 economies, United States of America, United Kingdom, China, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore, contributed 51% of the total export value, a further 7% was unallocated. For Australia's service imports, the top 6 economies, United States of America, Singapore, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Japan and Hong Kong contributed 50% of the total import value, a further 6% was unallocated.
