WATER ACCOUNT AUSTRALIA 2013-14

New South Wales

  • New South Wales households and industry consumed 7,508 GL of water in 2013-14, down by 15% from 2012-13 when consumption was 8,806 GL.
  • This decrease was driven by the 'Agriculture' industry, which consumed 4,983 GL in 2013-14 compared to 6,210 GL in 2012-13, a decrease of 20%. The main reason for this was a large decrease in the volume of water used for the irrigation of rice, down 40% (or 708 GL), from 1,774 GL in 2012-13 to 1,066 GL in 2013-14.
  • Water consumption for New South Wales was the highest of any state or territory in 2013-14 at 7,508 GL, or 40% of total water consumption in Australia.
  • In New South Wales, the Gross State Product per kL of water consumed was $65. This was below the Australian average of $84 per kL.
  • The average price of water paid by New South Wales households in 2013-14 was $2.88 per kL, a 27% increase from $2.26 per kL in 2012-13, and remains slightly below the Australian average of $3.08 per kL.
  • Household water consumption per capita decreased from 76 kL in 2012-13 to 75 kL in 2013-14, just below the Australian average of 80 kL.
  • The gross value of irrigated agricultural production (GVIAP) in New South Wales in 2013-14 was about $3.5 billion - a 4% increase from 2012-13 or 24% of the Australian total.
  • The 'Manufacturing' industry consumed 129 GL of water in 2013-14 (a 5% rise from 2012-13). The 'Mining' industry recorded a 4% increase from 2012-13, consuming 110 GL.
  • New South Wales revenue for total water sales and services was $4.2 billion in 2013-14. This was the second highest of all states and territories and accounted for 26% of the Australian total.
  • In New South Wales an estimated 40 GL of water was consumed from household rainwater tanks; this was the highest of all states and territories and accounted for 26% of all household tank water consumed in Australia.


Victoria

  • Water consumption in Victoria was estimated at 3,988 GL in 2013-14, 21% of the Australian total and a 5% decrease from 2012-13.
  • In Victoria the Gross State Product per kL of water consumed was $86, an increase of $5 per kL from 2012-13. This was just above the Australian average of $84 per kL.
  • Estimated household water consumption for Victoria was 366 GL or 9% of the state's total water consumption, a 3% increase from 357 GL in 2012-13.
  • Estimated household water consumption per capita was 63 kL in 2013-14, the lowest of all states and territories. This was 11 kL less per capita than the next lowest state or territory.
  • The estimated average price of water paid by households in Victoria in 2013-14 was $3.39 per kL - an increase of 24% from 2012-13 and well above the Australian average of $3.08 per kL.
  • The 'Agriculture' industry was the highest consumer of water in Victoria, responsible for the consumption of 2,572 GL. 'Agriculture' water consumption decreased by only 1% from 2012-13, while its share of total state water consumption increased from 62% to 65%.
  • Irrigation of land used for Dairy cattle remained the biggest water consuming activity, decreasing by 14% but accounting for 38% of all water used by 'Agriculture'.
  • The gross value of irrigated agricultural production (GVIAP) in Victoria was about $4.5 billion in 2013-14 (up 21% from 2012-13), which was 31% of the total GVIAP in Australia and the highest reported GVIAP of all the states and territories.
  • Total revenue from water sales and services in Victoria in 2013-14 was about $4.6 billion, the highest of all the states and accounting for 28% of the Australian total.
  • The 'Manufacturing' industry consumed an estimated 135 GL or 33% of total water consumption in Victoria, a 4% increase from 129 GL in 2012-13.
  • Water supplied by soil in Victoria was estimated at 26,356 GL or 8% of the National water supply by soil.
Queensland

  • Water consumption in Queensland was estimated at 4,145 GL in 2013-14, 22% of the Australian total water consumption and the second highest among states and territories.
  • In Queensland, total water consumption per capita was 878 kL, 11% above the Australian average of 794 kL.
  • In Queensland the Gross State Product was $71 per kL of water consumed, lower than the Australian average of $84 per kL.
  • In 2013-14 the average price of water paid by Queensland households was $3.26 per kL, higher than the average water price in Australia ($3.08 per kL).
  • Household water consumption per capita was 78 kL, just below the Australian average of 80 kL.
  • Queensland households recorded the third highest expenditure ($1.1 billion) on urban distributed water of all state and territories.
  • The 'Agriculture' industry consumed the most water in Queensland in 2013-14 with 2,761 GL, or 67% of the total water consumption in Queensland, a 12% increase since 2012-13. This was driven by a 46% (333 GL) increase in the volume of water used for the irrigation of sugar cane.
  • The gross value of irrigated agricultural production (GVIAP) in Queensland was $3.5 billion in 2013-14, the third highest in Australia. This was an increase of $222 million, or 7%, from 2012-13.
  • The 'Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Services' industry consumed the second highest amount of water in Queensland in 2013-14. The industry consumed 392 GL of water, or 9% of the total water consumption in Queensland, a 33% increase since 2012-13.
  • The 'Mining' and 'Manufacturing' industries consumed an estimated 149 GL (an increase of 5% from 2012-13) and 139 GL (an increase of 9%) of water respectively in 2013-14.
  • Queensland had the highest level of soil water supply of all the states and territories, estimated at 103 GL, or 56% greater than the next highest state or territory.
  • Queensland had the highest estimated consumption of water sourced from household rainwater tanks with 46 GL (or 29% of Australia's total consumption from rainwater tanks) in 2013-14. Queensland also had the largest tank storage capacity (9 GL) of all the states and territories.
South Australia

  • Water consumption in South Australia was estimated at 1,077 GL in 2013-14 (or 7% of Australian water consumption), compared to 1,159 GL in 2012-13.
  • The 'Agriculture' industry was the largest consumer of water in South Australia in 2013-14, consuming 691 GL. This was 64% of the total water consumption in South Australia.
  • Water consumption, by industry and households, per capita was 639 kL, 20% lower than the Australian average of 794 kL per capita.
  • Gross State Product per kL of water consumed was $88, up from $81 per kL in 2012-13. This was higher than the Australian average of $84 per kL.
  • The average water price paid by households was $4.29 per kL in 2013-14. This was the highest average water price in Australia and well above the Australian average of $3.08 per kL.
  • South Australia's per capita household water consumption decreased from 78 kL per capita in 2012-13 to 74 kL per capita in 2013-14. This was below the Australian average of 80 kL per capita.
  • South Australian urban households spent an estimated total of $531 million on distributed water, a decrease of 3% from 2012-13.
  • The gross value of irrigated agricultural production (GVIAP) in South Australia was $1.5 billion in 2013-14 - a 2% decrease from 2012-13. This was driven by decreases in GVIAP for 'Grapes' and 'Vegetables for human consumption', decreasing by 22% and 24% respectively.
  • The 'Manufacturing' industry in South Australia consumed 79 GL of water or 7% of total water consumption for the state. 'Mining' consumed 38 GL of water, while the 'Electricity and Gas Supply' industry consumed only 2 GL.
  • South Australia consumed an estimated 20 GL of water sourced from household rainwater tanks.

Western Australia

  • Water consumption in Western Australia was estimated at 1,317 GL in 2013-14, a 2% increase from 2012-13 when it was 1,287 GL.
  • Estimated water consumption (by industry and households) per capita was 514 kL, 35% lower than the Australian average of 794 kL.
  • The Gross State Product per kL of water consumed (by industry and households) was $195, the second highest of all states and territories and 132% higher than the Australian average of $84 per kL.
  • The average water price paid by Western Australian households was $2.24 per kL, the second lowest among the states and territories and well below the national average of $3.08 per kL.
  • Household water consumption per capita in Western Australia was estimated at 132 kL, the second highest of all states and territories and 65% above the national average of 80 kL per person.
  • The gross value of irrigated agricultural production (GVIAP) was $801 million in 2013-14, slightly up from $791 million in 2012-13.
  • Households and the 'Agriculture' industry consumed the largest volume of water in Western Australia (339 GL and 296 GL respectively) in 2013-14. Households and 'Agriculture' accounted for nearly half (48%) of total water consumption in Western Australia. Western Australia was one of the only two states or territories in which household water use exceeded 'Agriculture' water use in 2013-14.
  • The 'Mining' industry consumed 271 GL of water in Western Australia in 2013-14, 12% higher than in 2012-13. Mining accounted for 21% of total water consumption in Western Australia in 2013-14.
  • The 'Manufacturing' industry consumed 58 GL (4% of the total water consumption for the state) and the 'Electricity and Gas Supply' industry consumed 33 GL (2%) in 2013-14.
  • In 2013-14, an estimated 10 GL of water was consumed from household rainwater tanks, of which 3 GL was consumed in Perth.

Tasmania

  • Estimated water consumption in Tasmania was 390 GL in 2013-14, a 1% decrease from 2012-13 (395 GL).
  • Total water consumption (by industries and households) in Tasmania was 757 kL per capita, similar to 2012-13 (756 kL per capita) and 5% less than National consumption per capita of 794 kL.
  • The Gross State Product per kL of water consumed (by industry and households) was $64, well below the Australian average of $84 per kL and the lowest of the states and territories.
  • In 2013-14, around 49,541 GL of water was extracted from the environment for use in Tasmania, but nearly all of this was by the 'Electricity and Gas Supply' industry (48,533 GL) for hydro-electric power generation, which is an in-stream or non-consumptive use.
  • Tasmanian households paid an average price of $3.52 per kL for water in 2013-14, well above the Australian average of $3.08 per kL. This was a 6% increase from 2012-13.
  • Household water consumption per capita in Tasmania was 74 kL, 8% lower than the Australian average of 80 kL per capita. Tasmania household water consumption per capita was down marginally from 2012-13.
  • The 'Agriculture' industry in Tasmania was the largest water consumer in 2013-14, accounting for 235 GL or 60% of the total state water consumption. The 'Manufacturing' industry consumed 31 GL or 8% of total state water consumption.
  • The 'Mining' industry in Tasmania consumed 41 GL or 10% of water consumption. This was an increase of 45% from 2012-13.
  • The gross value of irrigated agricultural production (GVIAP) in Tasmania was $733 million in 2013-14, a 20% increase from 2012-13 ($613 million).
  • Total revenue from sales of urban distributed water in Tasmania in 2013-14 was $124 million, increasing slightly from $118 million in 2012-13. Revenue from waste water and other water related services was estimated at $117 million, up from $107 million in 2012-13.

Northern Territory

  • Estimated water consumption by industry and households in the Northern Territory was 167 GL in 2013-14, a slight decrease from 2012-13 (176 GL).
  • Total water consumption (industries and households) per capita was 684 kL, 14% lower than the Australian average of 794 kL per capita.
  • The Gross State Product per kL of water consumed (by industry and households) was $127, well above the Australian average of $84 per kL and the third highest of all states and territories.
  • Households in the Northern Territory consumed about 37 GL of water in 2013-14, accounting for 22% of total state water consumption. This was a 15% increase from 2012-13 (32 GL).
  • Household water consumption per capita for 2013-14 was 152 kL - the highest household water consumer of all states and territories on a per capita basis in this period. This represents a 15% increase from 132 kL in 2012-13 and is 90% more than the national per capita consumption of 80 kL.
  • The average price of water paid by Northern Territory households in 2013-14 was $2.19 per kL, the lowest of all states and territories. This was an increase of 7% from 2012-13 when it was $2.04 per kL, however it was still well below the Australian average of $3.08 per kL.
  • The 'Agricultural' industry in the Northern Territory consumed 50 GL of water in 2013-14. This was 30% of total water consumption in the Northern Territory.
  • Water use by the 'Mining' industry dropped by 35% since 2012-13 to 31 GL (from 48 GL).
  • In 2013-14, an estimated 0.6 GL of household rainwater tank water was consumed, with the equivalent monetary value of $1.2 million.

Australian Capital Territory

  • The Australian Capital Territory consumed an estimated 53 GL of water in 2013-14, up by only 2% from 2012-13 when it was 52 GL.
  • Total water consumption (industries and households) per capita was 138 kL, the lowest of all states and territories and well below the Australian average of 794 kL per capita.
  • The Gross State Product per kL of water consumed (by industry and households) was $671, a decrease of $8 per kL from 2012-13 and well above the Australian average of $84 per kL.
  • The Australian Capital Territory recorded an average water price for households at $3.00 per kL in 2013-14, an increase of only 1% from 2012-13. This was just below the Australian average of $3.08 per kL.
  • Households in the Australian Capital Territory consumed about 31 GL in 2013-14, which is higher than the consumption of all industries combined (22 GL).
  • Household water consumption per capita in the Australian Capital Territory in 2013-14 was 81 kL, slightly more than the Australian average (80 kL).
  • In 2013-14 water consumed from household rainwater tanks in the Australian Capital Territory was an estimated 0.9 GL or about 1% of the National consumption total.
  • Gross Soil water supply in the Australian Capital Territory decreased by 24%, this was the biggest annual decrease in soil water supply since 2002-03.
