CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

The Water Account Australia (WAA), 2010–11, is the sixth edition of this publication. For the first time the WAA is released in two parts - the first release (25 September 2012) consists of data cubes for Physical Supply and Use Tables for Australia and the States and Territories, while the second part of the publication, released 27 November 2012, consists of a summary of the results, Monetary Supply and Use Tables and more detailed datacubes relating to monetary water supply and use, water supply, sewerage and drainage services and the agriculture industry.

Previous editions of the Water Account Australia consisted of a number of Chapters containing commentary to highlight key data and assist with interpretation of tables, which were interspersed with commentary. From 2010–11 the accounts will be presented in a more streamlined format - all data tables have been moved to the "downloads" section and all commentary is contained within this summary.

The following tables can be viewed in the "downloads" section of the publication:

  • Summary - contains summary statistics for water consumption combined with gross state product and population statistics, water consumption by State/Territory and summary industry gross value added per GL of water consumed.
  • Monetary water supply and use - contains tables that combine monetary information based on the Australian National Accounts and water price information, with the physical water flow information.
  • Water supply, sewerage and drainage - presents information on the Water supply, sewerage and drainage industry, including distribution losses, regulated discharges, bulk water supplied, number of water providers and the origins (i.e. surface water, groundwater) of distributed and reuse water (i.e. waste water, drainage water and storm water).
  • Agriculture - contains a set of tables displaying the consumption of water by the agriculture industry.
  • Water supply and use - presents information on the volume of water supplied and used by industry and households within the Australian economy. There is a separate spreadsheet for Australia and each State and Territory containing data for the 2009–10 and 2010–11 reference periods. Note that the 2009–10 data is revised and replaces the data released in the 2009–10 Water Account Australia.

The second part of this release includes estimates for the preceding year (2009–10 and in some cases 2008–09 as well), which may include revisions reflecting improved source data and updated information. Details of any major revisions to published data are described within the Explanatory Notes.

Due to the uncertainty in the estimates, in the 2010–11 edition of the WAA the Environmental Flows that were reported in surveys are presented in the physical supply and use tables only within the regulated discharge estimates for the Water supply, sewerage and drainage services and Electricity and gas supply industries (the Environmental Flows were not presented within the estimates for distributed, reuse and in-stream water supplied and used). In future releases of WAA estimates presented in the 2008–09 and 2009–10 editions of the WAA will be revised to reflect this change.
