  • In 2010-11, the total Gross Value of Irrigated Agricultural Production (GVIAP) for Australia was $12.9 billion. The three commodities with the highest GVIAP in Australia were vegetables valued at $2.9 billion, fruit (excluding grapes) valued at $2.5 billion and dairy production valued at $2.1 billion.
  • In the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) region, the total GVIAP was $5.9 billion, which was 46% of the total GVIAP for Australia. In 2010-11, the commodities with the highest GVIAP in the MDB were cotton valued at $1.5 billion, fruit (excluding grapes) valued at $1.3 billion and dairy production with a valued at of $836 million.
  • Vegetables were the commodities with the highest GVIAP value in most states and territories. For example in 2010-11, in Queensland the GVIAP for vegetables was valued at $982 million, in South Australia vegetables were valued at $477 million, and in Western Australia, vegetables were valued at $286 million, which constituted 36% of total GVIAP in that jurisdiction. Vegetables were also the highest GVIAP commodity in the Northern Territory, valued at $40.6 million. However, Victoria and Tasmania went against this trend with dairy production valued at $1.3 billion and $214 million respectively. In New South Wales, cotton was the commodity with the highest GVIAP, valued at $928 million, whilst in the Australian Capital Territory nursery production was the highest commodity with the highest GVIAP, valued at $3 million.
