These products provide data on disability status, need for assistance and provision of care, for all persons in selected households and selected persons in health establishments. Information available includes difficulty or need for assistance in ten common activities of daily living, education and employment restrictions, receipt of assistance, specific impairments and underlying health conditions; the ability of older people to carry out activities such as household chores, meal preparation and transport; and the experience and impact of caring for people with severe or profound restrictions, as well as relevant standard demographic, labour force and other socio-economic details. A detailed list of data items is available on the Downloads tab.

The microdata enables users to tabulate, manipulate and analyse data. Steps to confidentialise the dataset are taken to ensure the integrity of data and maintain confidentiality of respondents. This includes removing any information that might uniquely identify an individual, reducing the level of detail for some items and collapsing some categories.

Approved users can combine information about people with disabilities, carers and other household members to enable in-depth studies of disability and carer issues. SDAC files are arranged in a hierarchy, made up of the following 10 levels:

1. Household
2. Family
3. Income Unit
4. Person
5. All conditions
6. Restrictions
7. Specific activities
8. All recipients (not available for STB)
9. Broad activities
10. Providers of assistance
