ESSENTIAL STATISTICAL ASSETS FOR AUSTRALIA

Culture and sport participation and attendance are Essential Statistical Assets for Australia

The Essential Statistical Assets for Australia (ESA) is an initiative led by the ABS to identify the nation's key official statistics and from these, the underlying datasets used to produce these statistics.

The purpose of this initiative is to identify the core set of essential statistical assets generated by governments and use this list to support the prioritisation of ongoing investment in these assets. The broader set of official statistics is still important and will continue to be produced, however these core set are considered essential to inform decision making by governments.

Essential Statistical Assets for Australia, 2013 (cat. no. 1395.0) was released on 14 March 2013. This presents the 2013 list of ESA for Australia and is proposed to be reviewed after two years, with future review every three to five years to ensure the list remains relevant. The list is organised around three pillars: Economy, Environment and Society. Cultural and sport participation and attendance has been included under Society as being an important element of societal well-being as well as being critical in the development of policy and program directions. Cultural participation and attendance are a means of fostering creativity, innovation and dialogue necessary for economic development and data in this area are critical in the context of the National Cultural Policy. Sport participation provides opportunities for social interaction and for improving health and physical fitness with relevant sport participation data important in relation to the National Physical Activity Guidelines and the National Sport and Active Recreation Policy Framework.
