NOTES

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This publication brings together statistics for live births and fertility in Australia. Data refer to births registered during the calendar year shown, unless otherwise stated. State or territory relates to the state or territory of usual residence, unless otherwise stated.

Populations used in the calculation of fertility rates for 2006 and earlier years are the final estimated resident population by age and sex based on results of the 2006 Census of Population and Housing (2006 Census) and earlier censuses. Fertility rates for 2007 to 2010 are calculated using 2006 Census based revised 30 June estimated resident population for each year, while rates for 2011 are calculated using 2006 Census based preliminary 30 June 2011 estimated resident population.

Sub-state 30 June 2011 estimated resident populations were only compiled based on the 2011 Census of Population and Housing (2011 Census). As such, these 2011 Census based preliminary estimated resident populations are provided and used in the calculation of fertility rates for sub-state data cubes for the years 2007 to 2011.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Fertility rates for 2010 at the state and territory level have been revised using 2006 Census based revised 30 June 2010 estimated resident population, which takes into account revisions to population components.

Fertility rates for 2007 to 2010 at the sub-state level (Tables 2, 3, 4 and 5) have been revised using 2011 Census based preliminary 30 June estimated resident populations for these years.

Data cubes containing birth and fertility statistics under the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) have been released and are available electronically from the Downloads tab of this publication on the ABS website (see Table 12: Births, Summary, Statistical Areas Level 4, 2006 to 2011 and Table 13: Births, Summary, Statistical Areas Level 2, 2006 to 2011).

CHANGES IN FUTURE ISSUES

Fertility rates for 2007 to 2011 will be revised using the final estimated resident population by age and sex based on the results of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing in the 2012 issue of this publication (to be released in October 2013).

ROUNDING

Calculations as shown in the commentary sections of this publication are based on unrounded figures. Calculations using rounded figures may differ from those published.

It is recommended that when using information presented in this publication, the relevant statistics be rounded.

All data are affected by errors in reporting and processing. Birth registration data are also affected by delays in registration.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The efforts of Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages to improve the data quality, coverage and timeliness of birth registration information, processes and systems are noted and valued by the ABS.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Where necessary, tables have had small values suppressed or randomised to protect confidentiality. As a result, sums of components may not add exactly to totals.
