NOTES

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

This product contains estimates of the resident populations of areas of Australia as at 30 June in each year from 2001 to 2010. The areas for which estimates are provided are Local Government Areas (LGAs), Statistical Local Areas (SLAs), Statistical Divisions (SDs), Statistical Subdivisions (SSDs), Statistical Districts, Remoteness Areas and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2010 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC).

Although the majority of the text in this product focuses on changes at the LGA level, selected SLAs are referred to in some of the text and tables, particularly where LGAs cover multiple SLAs, such as Brisbane (C) and Darwin (C), and in unincorporated areas within the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. Estimates of the resident population of all LGAs and SLAs in Australia are available in spreadsheets accompanying this release in the Downloads tab.

The total population of the Other Territories, namely Jervis Bay Territory, Territory of Christmas Island, Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Off-Shore Areas and Migratory is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.

ERP STATUS AND FUTURE RELEASES

The estimates in this product are final for 2001 to 2006 and revised for 2007 to 2009 (denoted 2007r, 2008r and 2009r). Estimates for 2010 are preliminary (denoted 2010p). Preliminary population estimates for SLAs and LGAs, as at June 2010 by sex and five-year age groups, will be released on 04 August 2011 in Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2010 (cat. no. 3235.0).

ACCURACY OF POPULATION ESTIMATES

It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are produced using 2006 census data and mathematical models and are subject to error. Caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations. For more information see paragraphs 13 to 17 of the Explanatory Notes.

In commentary based on statistics in this publication, it is recommended that the relevant statistics be rounded. While unrounded figures are provided in spreadsheets in order to facilitate calculations of sums and percentages, accuracy to the last digit is not claimed and should not be assumed. No reliance should be placed on statistics with small values.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

A new data cube, containing population estimates by Remoteness Areas (as defined in the ASGC) from 2001 to 2010, has been added. This information can be found in the Downloads tab of this product.

A state and territory summary table, which includes total estimates of the resident population for Australia, has also been added to the SLA and LGA data cubes.

FUTURE CHANGES IN THIS PRODUCT

From 30 June 2011, the ABS will be replacing the nation's official statistical geography, the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) with the new Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). Sub-state population estimates from 30 June 2012 will no longer be prepared or released at the SLA level, but instead at the Statistical Area 2 (SA2) level. LGA estimates will continue to be prepared and released. For more information please see: ASGS and the future of sub-state population estimates.
