Australian outward foreign affiliates trade

Data on Australian outward foreign affiliates trade are part of a new suite of globalisation statistics being developed by the ABS. Sales of goods and services may be effected not only through transactions between residents and non-residents which are recorded in the balance of payments accounts, but also through direct investment enterprises or affiliates established in foreign countries. Globalisation statistics also measure the trade activity of foreign-owned enterprises in a host economy. Data on the trade activity of majority foreign-owned affiliates in the compiling economy are referred to as inward foreign affiliates trade, and data relating to foreign affiliates majority owned by residents of the compiling economy are referred to as outward foreign affiliates trade.

Table 30.30 provides details of the characteristics of foreign affiliates of Australian enterprise groups in 2002-03, classified by region and by industry of foreign affiliate.

Some of the main findings relating to 2002-03 are:

  • Australian enterprise groups had 4,012 affiliates abroad employing 321,924 staff.
  • Foreign affiliates of Australian resident enterprise groups generated $142.3b in sales revenue for goods and services.

  • Finance and insurance generated the most revenue from the sales of services, accounting for 40% of services revenue.
  • Manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade accounted 87% of goods sold and 86% of goods purchased.
  • Foreign affiliates in Asia-Pacific accounted for 58% of employment by foreign affiliates, with the Americas 22% and Europe 20%.
