STATISTICAL GEOGRAPHY IN NSW

NSW Statistical Geography has undergone significant change as a result of Local Government Area (LGA) restructuring. The 2005 Australian Standard Geographic Classification (ASGC) (cat. no. 1216.0) will reflect all current NSW LGA changes.

The 2006 ASGC, which is the basis for 2006 Census and Estimated Resident Population data, will also include a number of changes to other geographic levels as a result of consultations and reviews undertaken in NSW.

For 2006, there will be changes to the Statistical Local Area (SLA) level of geography in NSW. These will include the removal of a number of SLAs with populations below 10,000 persons and some new SLAs dividing areas with populations near or over 100,000 persons. Some NSW Statistical Districts (S Dist) have also undergone change. The Gold Coast-Tweed S Dist has been enlarged to include coastal development in the southern part of the Tweed LGA while the Bathurst-Orange S Dist will be divided into two S Dists based on the former Bathurst and Current Orange LGA boundaries.
