OCTOBER KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: October 2012 trend estimate (96 465) has increased by 1.0% when compared with September 2012.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The October 2012 seasonally adjusted estimate for new motor vehicle sales (95 720) decreased by 2.8% when compared with September 2012.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for October 2012 with September 2012, sales of Passenger, Sports utility and Other vehicles have increased by 1.0%, 1.1% and 1.0% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for October 2012 with September 2012, sales of Passenger, Sports utility vehicles and Other vehicles have decreased by 3.1%, 3.0% and 1.6% respectively.


SALES BY STATE
  • In trend terms, all eight states and territories experienced an increase for new motor vehicle sales when comparing October 2012 with September 2012. Tasmania recorded the largest percentage increase (2.5%), followed by Victoria (1.5%) and South Australia (1.4%).
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, seven of eight states and territories experienced a decrease in new motor vehicle sales when comparing October 2012 with September 2012. The Australian Capital Territory recorded the largest percentage decrease with (5.9%), followed by Victoria (4.2%) and New South Wales (2.8%). Over the same period, The Northern Territory was the only state or territory to experience an increase of 4.1%.

DATA NOTES

The flooding which occurred in Thailand in from June 2011 may have had an impact on new vehicle sales in Australia due to associated delays in delivery of Thai manufactured vehicles and vehicle parts. The impacts from the flooding is no longer affecting the supply of new motor vehicles to Australia from Thailand.
