Wheat production in 2005-06 was 25.1 million tonnes, 3 million tonnes (14%) above the 2000-01 level. The area of wheat sown was also greater in 2005-06. The latest map of the Australian wheat belt shows areas in the south west of Western Australia and the central north of New South Wales where production has increased to over 40 tonnes per square kilometre since 2000-01. Despite an obvious reduction in the area sown to wheat in Queensland in 2005-06, production in that state that year was actually 5% greater than in 2000-01.
