2005-06 AGRICULTURAL CENSUS -RELEASE OF SMALL AREA AGRICULTURAL CENSUS DATA

It is with great excitement that we have released the final data for the 2005-06 Agricultural Census.

The five-yearly collection was conducted in 2006 of all businesses on the Australian Business Register (ABR) involved in agricultural production who recorded an estimated value of agricultural operations (EVAO), or equivalent, of $5,000 or greater per year.

The main objective of the Agricultural Census was to provide benchmark information on the agriculture sector for small geographic areas. This census incorporated a number of significant changes intended to improve the data used to support this objective. The two key changes were the move to a new population frame and the use of mesh blocks to support flexible geographic output regions

Following release, on 4 March 2008, of final estimates of area and production of crops; livestock numbers and livestock products for major agriculture outputs; and industry structure details, Agricultural Commodities: Small Area Data, Australia, 2005-06 (cat. no. 7125.0) was released on 7th March 2008. This publication can be downloaded for free from the ABS website.

This information is also available as a CD-ROM which contains Excel files of all data in a convenient and accessible form. The CD-ROM costs $360.00 and can be ordered by contacting Linda Falzari.

A list of all upcoming publications is available on the Agriculture Theme page.

By June 2008 the ABS will be in a position to examine user defined data requests. The ability of ABS to meet these requests will be dependent on ABS confidentiality constraints, the size and location of the regions and the type of data requested.
