EXPLANATORY NOTES

USING THE PIVOT TABLE

The pivot table in Appendix 8 in the 'Downloads' tab presents information on countries and ports used in the dissemination of Australia's international merchandise trade statistics. It contains country and port names, country and port codes and the date of effect and cessation for both countries and ports.

Depending on user requirements, this pivot table can be manipulated to meet user needs. The functions described below will enhance analysis of the data.

1. Switching between countries and ports
Click on the filter beside countries or ports (in column B) and choose the desired item.

2. Pivoting the data
Pivot between country and port by moving the labels in the pivot table field list. Simply click and drag the labels between the Report filter and Row labels box - make sure a cell within the pivot table is highlighted to ensure the pivot table field list is displayed.

3. Sorting the data
a. Place the cursor in any cell within the column to be sorted
b. Under the pivot table Options tab, choose Sort or alternatively right click and choose Sort
c. Choose the required option.

Note: the overseas port codes are a 6 digit code whereas the Australian port codes are a 3 digit code.
