WORK PROGRAM CHANGES 2008–09

Demography's work program for 2008–09 has been reviewed, resulting in some reductions necessary to enable the ABS to continue providing a high quality statistical service within its budget appropriation for 2008–09. The focus has been on removing duplication and improving efficiency without compromising the quality and availability of data.

The following publications will be cancelled.

Census of Population and Housing: Population Growth and Distribution, Australia, 2006 (cat. no. 2035.0)

Much of the data in this five-yearly publication are already available on a more timely basis in other ABS publications such as Regional Population Growth, Australia (cat. no. 3218.0), Migration, Australia (cat. no. 3412.0), Australian Social Trends (cat. no. 4102.0) and Census of Population and Housing publications.

Short-term Visitor Arrival Estimates, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0.55.001)

The ABS will cease publication of Short-term Visitor Arrival Estimates, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0.55.001) from July 2008. The final issue will be the May 2008 issue which will be released on 18 June 2008. Statistics on short-term visitor arrivals will continue to be released monthly in Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0), the June 2008 issue of which will be released on 5 August 2008.

Production and release of the following publication will be deferred to early 2010.

Household and Family Projections, Australia (cat. no. 3236.0)

The following publications will continue, however they will be reviewed in terms of content:

Population by Age and Sex - Australian States and Territories (cat. no. 3201.0)
Births, Australia (cat. no. 3301.0)
Deaths, Australia (cat. no. 3302.0)
Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0)
Migration, Australia (cat. no. 3412.0)

Specifically the objective of the reviews will be to identify duplication within and across publications and to reduce analytical content in the form of special articles with an aim to simplify production and reduce preparation times. Statistical tables will increasingly be made available in downloadable spreadsheet format.

The remaining regular products (listed below) will continue to be released in their current format:
