KNOW BUSINESS AND THE ECONOMY WITH ECONOMIC DATA

Silhouette of two people and a building frameEconomic statistics are drawn from the results of a wide range of ABS surveys, as well as administrative data collected by other government agencies. Economic statistics include the Consumer Price Index, National Accounts, and a range of collections about business indicators and characteristics.

Business Indicators cover selected quarterly data relating to profits, inventories, sales, and wages and salaries. As well as being indicators of economic performance in their own right, the results of the surveys are used as major inputs into the compilation of the quarterly estimates of the Australian National Accounts.

Business demography statistics focus on measuring changes in the counts and characteristics of different types of businesses and changes in the demographics of business operators. Business characteristics include topics relating to employment, growth and innovation, finance, export activity, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) involvement. The data are used by a wide range of organisations and individuals, including government, private enterprise, international organisations, academics and researchers, as well as the wider community, for policy and research initiatives.

As business demographic information is available from a number of different sources, it should be noted that the range of business demographics data may not be comparable in terms of scope and coverage. Users should therefore be aware of these limitations when making comparisons between data in business demography publications.
