SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS

At the end of June 2007, there were 8,786 not-for-profit religious organisations in Australia. Examples of these types of organisations include churches, mosques, synagogues and services such as religious studies and the operation of spiritual retreats.

These organisations employed 40,744 people at the end of June 2007. Permanent full-time employees accounted for half (50.2% or 20,448 people) of total employment, permanent part-time employees nearly a third (31.3% or 12,755 people) and casual staff 18.5% (7,541 people).

In addition to paid employees, there were 469,586 volunteers during the 2006-07 financial year.

Industry value added by these organisations was $1.3b.


SOURCES OF INCOME

During the 2006-07 financial year, not-for-profit religious organisations received $3.6b in income.

The graph below shows that the main source of income for these organisations was donations, sponsorships and fundraising, which accounted for 38% ($1.4b) of total income. Donations, bequests and legacies from individuals accounted for almost all income (92% or $1.3b) received from this source.

Income from related or affiliated organisations accounted for 12.8% ($0.5b) of total income, and income from services 10.8% ($0.4b).

EXPENSES

During the 2006-07 financial year, not-for-profit religious organisations incurred $3.1b in expenses.

The graph below shows that the main expense item for these organisations was labour costs, which accounted for 39% ($1.2b) of total expenses.
