This article provides a brief overview of the prevalence of tobacco smoking and the morbidity and mortality attributed to smoking. Information about the health system costs associated with smoking and the health status and demographic characteristics of smokers is included. This article uses data from the 2004-05 ABS National Health Survey (NHS) as well as previous National Health Surveys from 1995 and 2001. Estimates of deaths attributable to smoking which use ABS Causes of Death data are included. The article also draws on data from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS) and other sources.
