Community events COMMUNITY EVENTS

Attending community events is an opportunity for individuals to bind with their community and to extend their social networks.

Men were less likely to attend a community event in the previous 12 months than women. The severity of disability also impacted on attendance. Men with profound or severe disability were least likely to have attended a community event (48%), compared to women with no disability who were the most likely to have attended (70%).

Attendance at community events in the last 12 months was higher for people without a disability living in inner regional to remote areas than those living in major cities. There was a similar trend amongst those people with less restrictive disability with a slight decrease in remote or very remote areas. For people with profound or severe disability, there was an increase from major cities to inner regional areas, but participation rates dropped for this group, the more remote the area in which the respondent lived (see Graph 17).

People with intellectual disabilities were the least likely to have attended a community event in the previous 12 months. Type of disability made no statistically significant impact on attendance for the people with profound or severe disability attending a community event in the previous 12 months (see Graph 18).
