POPULATION ESTIMATES OF ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER AUSTRALIANS

The ABS will be releasing a set of preliminary population estimates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, and non-Indigenous Australians by state and territory by sex by 5 year age group. This is an update to previous plans to release final estimates only for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. This decision is in response to having finalised the design specifications for distribution of net undercount for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population by states and territories, and from user feedback from both the Population Estimates Technical Workshop and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Demographic Statistics Expert Advisory Group meetings.

A key aspect of this decision was the need for the preliminary estimates to have a fixed (and constrained) shelf life of approximately 11 months, after which they will be replaced by the final estimates to be published in a subsequent publication of Estimates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, June 2011 (cat. no. 3238.0.55.001), to be released in August 2013 in parallel with the release of final 2011 Census rebased sub-state ERPs by age and sex. To ensure this fixed and constrained shelf life, preliminary estimates will not be published in any other ABS product. This is to ensure that user confusion that occurred with the preliminary 30 June 2006 estimates being published in Population Distribution, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2006 (cat. no. 4705.0) which has a 5-6 year shelf life, while final estimates were published in Estimates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, June 2006 (cat. no. 3238.0.55.001) and in Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0) and again in Estimates and Projections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 1991 to 2021 (cat. no. 3238.0) with the projection series, does not happen again.

For more information on the release timetable for ERP rebasing, see Information Paper: Rebasing Population Estimates, Australia, 2011, Aug 2011 (cat. no. 3101.0.55.001), and the forthcoming Information Paper: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Demographic Statistics Work Program and Release Plans, April 2012 (cat. no. 3238.0.55.003) to be released in late April 2012.
