Tourist Accommodation in the ACT


The data presented in this article relate to hotels, motels and serviced apartments in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Only those hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms or units are included in this article. The article presents analysis of ACT data from the year ended September 2001 to the year ended September 2006 as well as state and national comparisons.

At the end of the September quarter 2006 there were 58 tourist accommodation establishments in the ACT. This was two less than at the end of the September quarter 2001. Of the 58 establishments, 25 were motels and guest houses, 18 were serviced apartments and 15 were licensed hotels.

The number of available guest rooms at the end of the September quarter 2006 (5,046) was 1.3% fewer than at the end of the September quarter 2001 (5,113). Nationally the number of available guest rooms increased by 8.7% (to 213,768) over the same period.

Over the five years from the September quarter 2001 to the September quarter 2006, the number of available bed spaces in ACT tourist accommodation establishments fell by 3.0% to 14,639. All other states and the Northern Territory reported increases in the number of available bed spaces. Nationally, available bed spaces increased by 8.4% to 614,417.

There were 1,298,100 occupied room nights in the ACT for the year ended September 2006. This was an increase of 12.7% from the 1,151,500 room nights recorded during the year ended September 2001. Nationally there was an increase of 19.7% in occupied room nights.

The room occupancy rate in the ACT was 71.4% for the year ended September 2006. This was the highest room occupancy rate of all the states and territories and was 7.7 percentage points above the national rate (63.7%). The room occupancy rate at the end of the September quarter 2006 (75.0%) was 12.6 percentage points higher than at the same period in 2001. Tasmania recorded the lowest room occupancy rate (57.6%) of the states and territories for year ended September 2006.

Guest arrivals at ACT tourist accommodation establishments (with 15 or more rooms) increased in the five year period to the end of September 2006. Arrivals totalled 881,200, an increase of 0.2% on the number of arrivals recorded in the year ended September 2001. Compared to the year ended September 2005 the guest arrivals in the ACT increased by 1.1%. Nationally, guest arrivals increased from 32,508,400 to 38,476,000 (18.4%) over the five year period. Nationally there was a 1.8% increase since the year ended September 2005.

Guests stayed an average of 2.4 days at tourist accommodation establishments in the ACT in the year ended September 2006. Queensland recorded the longest average length of stay (2.7 days) while Tasmania had the shortest (1.9 days) for the year ended September 2006. The average length of stay was the same at the national level (2.3 days) for both the year ended September 2001 and the year ended September 2006.


In current terms there was a 27.0% increase in takings by tourist accommodation establishments in the ACT over the five years to the year ended September 2006 (from $129.8m to $164.9m). This was below the national increase of 36.2% over the same period. Over the same five year period actual takings increased the most in Tasmania (66.1%), while the lowest increase was in the Northern Territory (23.8%).

ACT tourist accommodation establishments, with 15 or more rooms, employed 2,559 people at the end of the September quarter 2006. This was an increase of 319 people (14.2%) on the same period in 2001. Nationally, the number of people employed at tourist accommodation establishments increased 3.6% (4,020 people).
