    OVERVIEW

Periodic surveys of selected service industries are undertaken in response to specifically identified user needs for data that support in-depth studies of individual service industries and/or activities for use in micro-economic analysis and policy formulation.

    PURPOSE
The main internal user with interest in these activities is the National Accounts Branch (NAB). Outputs from this collection are required by NAB for measuring the domestic supply of the main products in the industry which are used in deriving supply use benchmarks. This collection is also an essential input to the benchmarking of the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA). The specific data items required for the TSA are met through the standard data items collected from this survey.

The main external users of this survey include the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources (DITR) and the Australian Hotels Association (AHA). Key demands are estimates on the size and structure of the industry.

The survey's scope includes businesses that generate income predominantly from the provision of short term accommodation services for visitors. These businesses are classified according to Class 4400 of the 2006 edition of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), which covers the following activities:
