Footnotes:
(a) The Usual Residence count is derived from the usual residence questions on the census form.
(b) The Place of Enumeration count refers to the count of people in the state/territory they were located on Census Night. This count:
  • includes overseas visitors for Age (AGEP) and Registered Marital Status (MSTP)
  • excludes overseas visitors for all other person variables
  • excludes Australian residents temporarily overseas.
(c) By definition, Usual Residence counts for Age (AGEP) and Registered Marital Status (MSTP) exclude overseas visitors.
(d) For 2006, two variables, Ancestry1 (ANC1P) and Ancestry2 (ANC2P) were used to record responses separately. In previous censuses, both ancestry responses were coded to a single variable, Ancestry (ANCP).
(e) New variable for 2006.
(f) In 2006, this variable's name changed from Birthplace to Country of Birth.
(g) Persons aged 15 years and over.
(h) Persons who speak a language other than English at home. Excludes non-respondents to the Language Spoken at Home (LANP) question.
(i) Replaces the Industry Sector (GNGP) variable. Differs from the 2001 category in that Community Development Employment Projects Participation (CDEP) has been deleted.
(j) Industry of Employment is coded to a revised classification (ANZSIC 2006) for the 2006 Census.
(k) The derivation of Labour Force Status has changed between 2001 and 2006, and is not comparable.
(l) Occupation is coded to a new classification (ANZSCO) for the 2006 Census.
(m) PURP, PUR1P and PUR5P are new hierarchical variables, combining the concepts of State of usual residence, SLA of usual residence, and CD of usual residence, which were output as separate fields in previous censuses. The non-response rate represents the number and percentage of people who gave no information, at any geographic level, regarding their usual residence at a specific point of time.
(n) Persons aged 1 year and over.
(o) Persons aged 5 years and over.
(p) Answering this census question is optional.
(q) Persons in a non-private dwelling.
(r) Females aged 15 years and over. New variable for 2006. It was last included in 1996.
(s) Persons attending an educational institution. Excludes non-respondents to the Full/Part-Time Student Status (STUP) question.
(t) Persons born overseas, but excludes overseas visitors.
